August has finally arrived, signally the slow + ever so sad decline of summer. So as the first Tuesday of this new month rolls around, let’s celebrate rather than sulk, with a custom cocktail and the appropriate accoutrements.
Thirty-one dreamy days of this summer month lie ahead (or did, at the start). Originally, the month was intended to have only thirty days. It all traces back to the creation of the calendar by the ancient Romans, which is where today’s drink finds its inspiration. Julius Caesar’s grandnephew, Augustus, who defeated Marc Antony + Cleopatra to reign as Roman Emperor, is where the month finds its name. The reason for adding a thirty-first day (and no, not for one last beachside bender)? So that the ruler’s greatness was not consider lesser than Caesar’s, for which July finds its name.
And with that, the most new knowledge manageable for our mind, we drink (so that we can aptly forget it all).
When in Rome.
