Boozy Tuesday, Vol. 7

It’s that time again (and I don’t just mean the liquor-loving blues-be-gone Boozy Tuesday to ease your mid-week melancholia). Back-to-school season. From crayons to calculus, brown bag lunches to books, backpacks, and binders, it’s enough overwhelm to send anyone to the bar. So, to ease your educational woes, this week’s creative cocktail is a tipsy toast to celebrate the start of a new semester…considering, of course, you’re of the legal age.

With autumn in toe and those lazy, hazy days of summer facing their finality, it seems high time for a hiatus of the vodka variety. In short, it’s a little less than ladylike to be lifting tropical toasts in any other season but summer. So until the days of sunscreen and neoprene return in nine months, Boozy Tuesday will no longer be a weekly feature at SxS…with the occasional exception of an eggnog elixir or spicy icy cider every now and again.

Warm Weather Leather: How To

9bf3f5aa28ebafb37abae018e2edd91f

The heat is on here in Southern California.  For once, our summer sun seems to be on par with those of the north-eastern variety.  Usually by late summer, overly eager + utterly impatient style savants have grown bored with cut-offs + crop top , leaving them behind in the wake of fall’s new fashions.  While Manhattanites, Bostonians,  + the like are at the mercy of the heat when it comes to switching seasons, we California folk are (usually) blessed enough to ease into autumn whenever we please.  But for some reason – thanks a lot global warming – our summer is as hot + humid as the rest of ’em. So adopting the looks of next season seems absurd…

Yet the diehard + dedicated of the fashion world would do anything for their wearables.  Even dare to dabble in leather.  Here are a few ways to practice the fine art of warm-weather leather.

1. Play with color.  While shades of black + brown are always a classic look, hides hued in a wide assortment of color are the ultimate statement pieces.  And the color shades give leather looks a more seasonable feel.

2. A little goes a long way.  No one would be caught dead clad head to heel in leather in August, no matter where you live.  Accessories provide a great way to include leather in your look without suffering for style.

3. Experiment with silhouettes + structure. Think leather and immediately the classic biker jacket comes to mind.  But a daring dose of non-traditional styles done in hide can be a huge hit.  Shorts, skirts, minidresses, tanks…those dime-a-dozen staples are something brand new through a simple textile transformation.

4. Think outside the box.  A burly, boyish leather jacket with a light + white dainty day dress? Check.  Over the knee, ultra tall suede boots + shorts?  Check.

5. Invest.  Let’s be real…most people can’t splurge on new suede often.  And leather ain’t cheap.  So choosing your hides wisely is key.  Certain key piece will not only perpetuate a smooth sail into autumn, but stand as timeless wardrobe classics.  Think vests, boots, moto jackets, etc.

Garden State

Growing your own greens (+ reds + oranges, for that matter) is one of the basic and yet most rewarding hobbies around.Nothing tastes quite as sweet as a tomato picked right from the vibe.  And watching the mere act of daily watering turn seeds to stems really is exciting.

Beyond that, the pursuits of a horticulturalist are truly grounding, forcing you to reconnect with the simple beauty of life; a crucial reminder that even the smallest + most basic acts affect us. It’s a lesson our mothers taught us from day one, but yet we so frequently sacrifice self-care for survival. It doesn’t take a lot to nourish soul, skin, + everything in between, but there’s always something we can deem more pressing. And so a reminder from a different mother is what we really need to realign our priorities.

But first, we plant.  While it may be well beyond the season for sowing your summer seeds, there’s an entire crop just waiting to be planted for the autumn months ahead. Here’s a handy growing guide of what to plant in July.

Likewise, apply a good dose of that same kind sentiment inwards. Swap the takeout for a home cooked meal. Meditate. Get an actual eight hours of sleep. A small act can make a mountain of difference.
